Julian's light infantry and bowmen

Other small but very important additions to the Roman army at Strasbourg.
I have painted some light infantry units; in the battle line, they were deployed at the left wing of the Roman army, in front of the woods occupied by the Alamans.
All models are from Miniart.
I also painted some units of bowmen, who were deployed behind the heavy infantry first line in order to hit the incoming Alamannic hordes.
This time the most part of the models are from the relatively new Italeri set dedicated to the Late Imperial Legion (nr. 6137), a very nice set indeed.

Super-painted figurines. Are the patterns on the shields are invented or belong to a specific troops?

Hello Puszkin, thank you very much. The patterns on the shields are inspired from the "Notitia Dignitatum" (sometime in a slightly simplified version ...), but, differently to the heavy infantry, I don't know if those particular units took part in the real battle and if they were light infantry.

So in total I thought. I am looking information, what paint on the shields light units and troops limitanei.

I think that the better (if not only) source about this is the "Notitia Dignitatum". You can find the complete text of the document in http://www.pvv.ntnu.no/~halsteis/notitia.htm
If you are so patient to read all the text, you'll find the name of the different units, divided in Legiones, Auxilia, Numeri, Vexillationes, Cunei and Palatina, Comitatenses, Pseudocomitatenses and sometime Limitanei. In many cases, you'll find the correspondant shield patterns in the painted pages of the same "Notitia Dignitatum". The problem is that you will not find what kind of troops they were (heavy, light, archers etc.), so you can obtain some indication only from the name of the unit itself.
If you need further information please do not esitate to send an email to my address izzo.stefano@gdf.it

The problem is that Notitia does not contain images of shields for units limitanei. Only shields field army. Old unit converted into limitanei could have some old signs on the shields. But all the rest - do not know. I'll have to invent.

You are absolutely right. I'm sure that the limitanei's shields showed the patterns of the old units they represented. The problem is that we don't know those patterns ...
